Dust Mite Proof Bedding for Asthma

Allergy Information / Asthma / Dust Mite Proof Bedding for Asthma
Back to Allergy Information

If your asthma is worse in the morning or overnight, you might be suffering from dust mite allergy, which can exacerbate your symptoms. Reducing your exposure to dust mites in your bedding can make a huge difference.

Dust mites need warmth, moisture and plenty of food in the form of shed skin scales which have been broken down by fungi. It is usual for a mattress to have been fully colonised by dust mites by the time it is 6 months old. Dust mites are present in most homes, in mattresses, bedding, carpets and soft furnishings. Reducing exposure to dust mites in your bedding can be achieved with the use of dust mite barrier cases, which are very densely woven to create a barrier between any dust mites in the bedding and the person in the bed.

The barrier cases block your exposure to the dust mite allergen, giving you an allergen free night’s sleep. These can be used to encase your mattress, duvets and pillow. Alternatively, a dust mite proof mattress case can be combined with a dust mite proof pillow and a dust mite proof duvet. Both systems are effective. The advantage of using a dust mite proof duvet is that you do away with the second duvet case as the duvet itself is encased in dust mite proof material.
