A selection of gentle washing powders and detergents for dry, itchy skin

Laundry detergents that are mild enough for eczema sufferers can be difficult to find.

Many washing products found on supermarket shelves can be laden with synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals that can make your condition even worse.

Eczema-prone skin needs the gentlest care, so we’ve selected this range of mild laundry detergents, washing powders and laundry balls.

Why are gentle laundry products so important for eczema sufferers?

If you have eczema, you need to take extra care with the substances that come into contact with your skin.

Washing machines are now designed to use very little water. This means that the washing can retain residues of detergents. The less residue there is on your washing, the lower the likelihood of you having a reaction to it. It is therefore even more important to choose appropriate laundry products.

Which kind of washing products should I look for?

Eczema laundry products need to be gentle on the skin. They should not contain harsh chemicals, dyes or synthetic fragrances/perfumes. If you have highly sensitive skin, even natural essential oils may trigger your symptoms. Some people may find that they tolerate non-bio laundry products better than the biological versions.

A good washing powder or detergent for eczema needs to be incredibly gentle but also contain effective antibacterial agents to kill any bacteria in your washing.

If your eczema is severe, you may not want to use a fabric conditioner. However, if you need to use fabric conditioner, make sure it contains only safe and gentle ingredients. This may include essential oils but no synthetic fragrances or harsh chemicals.

Rinsing well is vital

Emollients and eczema creams can cause a greasy residue in washing machines, so a regular empty wash at a high temperature can help to reduce this.

On each wash, you may find that an extra-long rinse cycle is helpful for reducing detergent residues.

A laundry ball (such as the Ecozone Ecoballs or Bluemagicball) can be very helpful for reducing the amount of detergent necessary for a hygienic wash.

Don’t forget about house dust mites

Don’t forget to wash your clothing and bedding on a high heat (60 degrees C or over) to remove allergenic house dust mite droppings. Dust mite allergy can sometimes make eczema worse, even if these allergens aren’t the root cause of your eczema.

These laundry products have been selected based on their gentle ingredients and good customer feedback. As the causes and symptoms of eczema are highly individual, we’re unable to guarantee that these products will be suitable for everyone.
