In order to sleep well, you need to be comfortable in your environment.

NHS Choices recommends that the bedroom should be kept at a temperature of between 18-24 degrees C, although individual preferences may vary.

Humidity levels should be measured using a hygrometer and adjusted according to your needs with a dehumidifier or humidifier.

Double glazed windows can help to deter damp and cold, and can also reduce noise levels to help you achieve unbroken sleep.

Beware of VOCs

Many people like to burn scented candles or use reed diffusers, plug-ins or aerosol sprays to fragrance their bedroom. We generally caution against this, as synthetic fragrances and aerosols can emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which may be hazardous to health. People with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) will definitely want to avoid these.  To create a tranquil atmosphere, why not burn unscented natural beeswax candles? If soothing fragrances help you to sleep, try filling a pouch with natural lavender and hanging it by your bed.

Using chemical cleaning products, aerosol sprays and furniture polishes can also reduce indoor air quality in your bedroom (and in fact, throughout your whole home). Look for natural products wherever possible. For example, instead of aerosol furniture polish try a natural beeswax-based alternative.

Make sure your bedroom is well ventilated throughout the day to prevent a stuffy atmosphere. An air purifier can help to further refine your indoor air quality. Some models are available which tackle airborne chemicals and VOCs.

What’s in your bedding?

Some of our chemically sensitive customers have reported reactions to chemically -treated bedding. Some items of bedding available on the market have been treated with chemical resins or made from cotton grown with pesticides. Be particularly wary of products labelled “easy care” or “non iron” as these may have been treated with a formaldehyde-based coating. Since bedding lies next to your skin all night, many people prefer to opt for natural, untreated bedding instead. Our organic bedding range is extremely popular and is certified free from harmful chemical treatments. Look for a certification like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) for peace of mind that a product has been rigorously tested and investigated to ensure it lives up to its organic claims!

Don’t forget to consider what laundry products you are using to wash your bed linens. Ditch highly fragranced fabric softeners and detergents and choose more natural alternatives.
