Use one suitable product as directed. Never mix household cleaning products.
Match the product to the task
Check the intended use and the surfaces it is suitable for. Cleaning, disinfecting and removing limescale are different tasks; a bottle is not automatically appropriate for all three. Follow any surface testing instruction and the manufacturer’s directions.
Find the instructions that change what you do
Look for dilution, application, ventilation, contact time, rinsing and any required protective equipment. Do not guess a dilution from the colour or smell. If the label is damaged or unreadable, do not use the product until you can obtain the correct instructions.
Keep products separate
Never mix cleaning products. Bleach can react with other cleaners, including acidic products and products containing ammonia, releasing harmful gases. A homemade mixture is not safer simply because one ingredient is familiar.
Keep the label with the contents
Leave products in their original labelled containers and store them as directed, out of reach of children and pets. Close them after use. Do not transfer a cleaning product into a food or drink container.
Build a simpler cupboard
Before buying another product, identify the task your existing supplies cannot do. Keep a short list of which product is suitable for which surface. Fewer decisions make it easier to follow the right instructions every time.
A small next step.
Use this list as you go. Ticks stay on this page only; nothing is sent or saved.
